Work Hard, Live Harder
During our younger years, we dedicate ourselves to working hard in school, driven by either our own ambitions or the pressure to succeed (from parents or peers). Our parents often instill in us the importance of "laying a strong foundation" for a better life in the future. We are ingrained with the notion of "working hard," and this concept follows us throughout our lives. As we transition into adulthood, we continue to work diligently in our chosen professions, aiming to making a mark and secure our livelihoods. We strive for success and put in relentless effort to achieve our goals, whether in school, our careers, or personal endeavors. It's a mindset that guides us, shaping our actions and decisions along the way.
However, as we progress in life, we may wonder if the cycle of "working hard" ever truly ends. We might anticipate that retirement will finally grant us a well-deserved break and release us from the pressures of work, allowing us to rest and stop "working hard." But contemplating the image of our lives being mostly devoted to work raises the question: could life be more fulfilling if we could live as passionately as we work, rather than eagerly waiting for retirement?
As adults, we often find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of responsibilities, leaving little time to truly experience and enjoy life. Striking a perfect work-life balance seems unattainable, as Oprah famously said, "We can have it all, but not all at the same time."
Recently, a friend shared her decision to prioritise spending time with her grandma, which brought her clarity and a better sense of managing her life. It reminds us of the importance of creating space for ourselves amid the hustle and bustle of work. We should intentionally set aside time for activities that recharge our souls, cherish moments with loved ones, and pursue hobbies that bring us happiness.
We've been taught how to "work hard" since a young age, but the concept of "living hard" is relatively new. It involves finding a balance between indulging in life's pleasures and seeking true, meaningful experiences. Each of us seeks different experiences, some more lavish than others, and there's nothing wrong with aspiring to a comfortable lifestyle.
In this beautiful journey of life, every day offers opportunities to savour and appreciate. While we work hard to build our careers and make a living, let's also make a conscious effort to create time and space to truly live. By embracing the moments that make life extraordinary yet simple in our own ways, we can lead a fulfilling and meaningful life, finding success and contentment in both our personal and professional spheres.
